Guam, a small island territory in the Pacific, grapples with unique waste management challenges due to its geographic isolation and limited land availability. With approximately 60% of the waste generated ending up in landfills, there is a dire need for sustainable waste management practices. The limited capacity of local landfills is exacerbating this crisis, prompting calls for more effective recycling and composting initiatives.

Community engagement in waste management is often hindered by a lack of resources and awareness about the benefits of composting. Many residents and businesses on the island are unfamiliar with how to compost or do not have the capacity to establish their own composting systems. This funding opportunity aims to establish community composting networks across Guam to facilitate cooperative waste management practices. Such networks will create shared composting facilities where residents can deposit their organic waste and learn best practices for composting.
