Grant Overview

Workforce Challenges in Guam’s Youth Gardening Initiatives

Guam's unique ecosystem faces threats from invasive species and environmental degradation, posing challenges to both its agriculture and ecological sustainability. A recent study revealed that over 150 invasive species are currently affecting local flora and fauna, hindering the growth of native plants and agricultural crops. As a result, the youth of Guam must not only learn about sustainable gardening practices but also develop strategies to combat these environmental challenges.

In a region where agricultural training is vital, the youth of Guam are particularly at risk of becoming disconnected from their environmental heritage. Limited exposure to gardening and ecological education contributes to a gap in workforce preparedness within the agriculture and environmental sectors. Without programs designed to engage young people in environmental stewardship and sustainable practices, the potential for future leaders in these fields remains underutilized.

The 'Guam Gardening Ambassadors for Youth' initiative aims to fill this gap by empowering Guam’s youth to take on leadership roles in promoting sustainable gardening practices. Participants will engage in hands-on workshops that focus on learning about native plants and the ecological challenges posed by invasive species. Through community planting events and outreach programs, youth will develop valuable skills while raising awareness about their local environment.

Additionally, digital skills training will be integrated into the program, allowing participants to document their gardening journeys and share them on social media platforms. This aspect of the program is designed to build a sense of community among participants while enhancing their understanding of contemporary communication methods in advocacy. Through this dual focus on environmental education and digital outreach, the initiative strives to cultivate a generation of 'Gardening Ambassadors' who are equipped to address both local ecological challenges and contribute positively to their communities.
