Grant Overview
Raising Disability Awareness Through Digital Resources in Guam
Guam's unique position as a U.S. territory with a diverse population introduces distinct challenges and opportunities in raising awareness about disability issues. Approximately 4.6% of the population, according to the 2020 Census, identifies as having a disability. However, many residents lack comprehensive knowledge about the rights and resources available to them, which can lead to social isolation and discrimination. The gap in understanding disability rights can be particularly pronounced in rural areas of the island, where access to information remains limited.
The key beneficiaries of this funding initiative will be residents of Guam, including individuals with disabilities, their families, and local organizations seeking to enhance community engagement. The demographic diversity of Guam, which includes a blend of indigenous Chamorro, Filipino, and other ethnic groups, necessitates culturally relevant approaches to education and outreach regarding disability rights.
The proposed project seeks to create a comprehensive digital resource hub that educates the people of Guam on disability issues and available services. By utilizing modern digital tools such as websites, social media platforms, and online training modules, this initiative will increase awareness of rights and resources associated with disabilities. Additionally, the digital hub will provide information on local services, advocacy opportunities, and educational resources tailored to meet the specific needs of Guam’s diverse community.
Anticipated outcomes include increased engagement rates, enhanced resource utilization, and a more informed and supportive community for individuals with disabilities. The success of the project will be measured by tracking website traffic, engagement metrics, and community feedback. By raising awareness and fostering a culture of acceptance and support, the initiative aspires to contribute positively to the quality of life for individuals with disabilities in Guam.
Ultimately, this funding initiative represents a strategic approach to overcoming informational barriers faced by individuals with disabilities in Guam, facilitating a more inclusive society through enhanced knowledge and resource access.
