Grant Overview

Rural and Urban Forest Restoration Efforts in Guam

Guam's rapidly increasing urbanization is creating significant pressures on its native forests, which have faced degradation due to development and invasive species. Approximately 70% of Guam's natural habitats have been lost, leading to a challenge where only about 30% of original forest cover remains, threatening biodiversity directly connected to the island's cultural and ecological heritage.

This problem affects both urban communities that have limited access to green spaces and rural communities that depend on these forests for sustaining their livelihoods. Schools and local organizations express a strong desire to engage youth in restoration efforts that foster ecological resilience. However, current programs lack the necessary funding and structured support to effectively mobilize these communities towards forest restoration.

The grant will fund community-led reforestation projects in Guam, focusing on restoring native forests through local partnerships. By creating educational programs in collaboration with schools and NGOs, the initiative will engage the youth in hands-on restoration activities, promoting biodiversity and ecological resilience through active participation in their local environments.

Eligibility for this funding will target local organizations, educational institutions, and community groups with a proven track record of environmental stewardship in Guam. Applicants must demonstrate existing community interest in forest restoration and outline specific project plans that encompass both restoration objectives and educational outcomes.

Application submissions should include a plan to engage students and community members, demonstrating how the program will foster local ownership and stewardship of natural resources. Prior experience with similar projects will be beneficial in applications to reinforce the applicant's capacity to fulfill project goals effectively.

The desired outcomes focus on increasing forest cover, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening community ties through collaborative restoration efforts. These objectives are significant for Guam, where the restoration of native habitats can bring ecological balance and promote sustainable practices among residents.

Implementation will involve initial workshops aimed at building awareness around the importance of biodiversity and how participants can contribute to restoration efforts. Following these workshops, community-led action days will be organized to instill hands-on experience among volunteers, culminating in a tangible reforestation impact in their local environments.

Guam's unique relationship between urban expansion and environmental stewardship makes this initiative essential in restoring the island’s ecological heritage while engaging local communities in meaningful ways.
