Grant Overview

Guam History and Culture Revitalization: Operationalizing Chamorro Language and Cultural Heritage. Guam's Chamorro language and cultural heritage are at risk due to the legacy of colonialism and cultural suppression. The Guam History and Culture Revitalization initiative supports educational programs, museum exhibitions, and community events that promote Chamorro language and cultural heritage. Operationalizing this initiative requires collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations. Guam's unique cultural context, with 37% of the population identifying as Chamorro, requires tailored approaches to language and cultural preservation. Unlike neighboring Palau, Guam's funding prioritizes projects that focus on intergenerational knowledge transfer and community-based cultural preservation. Guam's infrastructure includes a network of 5 cultural centers and 3 museums, with limited capacity for language and cultural programming. Funding will support research projects, teaching initiatives, and resource development that promote Chamorro language and cultural heritage. The initiative will also engage with Guam's community organizations, including the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities. By supporting Guam's cultural revitalization efforts, the initiative aims to promote the island's unique cultural identity and support its cultural heritage.
